Sunsmart on the mark

The crazy anti-tanning messages of the last decade are now being replaced with common sense message that is way overdue.

The importance of Vitamin D for optimal health has previously been shunned in favour of caution of avoiding skin cancer, but as research is discovering the importance of Vitamin D (even in the protection against Melanoma), the anti-cancer council unlike other more stubborn health authorities have modified their message.

for new recommendations on getting enough sun.

Gone is the ridiculous assertion that we need to wear sunscreen in winter, with recommendations now to expose oneself to the winter sun at least 2-3 hours a week.

The question we must continue to ask is: Is this still enough? If 400 iu of Vitamin D is sufficient as recommended then fine, however some research may suggest ten times that amount is optimal.

Unfortunately, for us office workers, there is absolutely no way we can get that amount of vitamin D from sunlight. Even in summer this could be difficult, as we have to work inside all day.

I don't know the best solution to this, however, including shell fish, free-range pork products (Lard) and maybe even Cod Liver Oil supplementation is possibly the only means that office workers could get anywhere near to this supposed optimal amount.

Those who have a healthy outdoor lifestyle need not worry so much, however being an office worker means skin gets very little exposure, and when it does finally get exposure it is likely to be extra-sensitive, which restricts the safe amount of time one can spend outside. Extra sensitivity does allow a quicker uptake of Vitamin D, but  unless one wants to risk sunburn, us vampires need to keep our exposure in check.

Early Spring is a good time to get the outdoor urge happening. The sooner you can brave the brisk Spring wind the better, giving your skin rays when the Vitamin D reserves are lowest, and allowing the skin to aclimatise before summer.

Don't forget that our ancestors never used suncream, perhaps hats and clothing to keep off the rays. So perhaps natural doses of sun can lead to high levels of sun-resistance when required? One thing I know is that unless our office gets a retractable roof I will never really find out.
