Heart tick still promoting dangerous products

The heart foundation gave industry plenty of time for industry to reduce the trans -levels of its promoted products to less than 1% by 1/1/2007.

On the 12th of January these products were seen in an independent supermarket.

Subject: trans-fat levels in margarines

Will signature range meet the National Heart Foundation deadline to get
it's trans-fat levels below 1% before the end of this year? Can we trust
that tubs of margarine with the "heart tick" currently with up to 8%
trans-fats will be absent from supermarket shelves after dec 31st?

Also, will Signature Range provide trans-fat levels on all its products,
I am particularly interested in knowing if Signature Range corn-chips,
chips, biscuits etc are free from hydrogenated oils? ie if the label
says 'palm oil' can we be sure this is not hydrogenated palm oil?

Response from Progressive Foods 25-10-2006

Dear Gordon

With reference to your query regarding Trans-fat.

We will be reducing the spreads/margarines to below the 1% in line with the
new Heart Foundation criteria by the end of the year.

With our other products we only label them with trans fat if the supplier
wishes to do so, all Home Brand products currently require labelling of
trans fat and we may roll this out to include Signature Range some time in
the future.

Response From Heart Foundation 18/1/2006

Dear Mr Rouse

Thank you for your query sent to the Heart Foundation general contact email address on Monday 15 January 2007.

Below are two responses which I trust will answer your various comments/queries:

1. Signature Range spreads/margarines do comply with the new Heart Foundation Tick Programme nutrition guidelines for trans fat.
Unfortunately, Progressive Enterprises have not yet been able to change the packaging of these Signature Range products to reflect this in the nutrition information panel.

The Heart Foundation Tick Programme has been in contact with Progressive Enterprises to request updated packaging of these products and has been informed that this will be happening shortly.

Progressive Enterprises advises the Heart Foundation Tick Programme that packaging delays are due to a packaging supplier issue.

2. Signature Range vegetable oils

All Signature Range oils that carry the Tick logo are compliant with the Heart Foundation Tick Programme nutrition guidelines for trans fat.

The Heart Foundation Tick Programme has signed off both compliant new product and packaging.

Please contact Sally Inkster at Progressive Enterprises on 09 275 2788 if you require any further information on their Tick product ranges.

Kind regards,

Ian Mathieson

Reply back to Heart Foundation 18/1/2007

Thanks for that response. I understand that the margarines now meet your
standards, but the products I pointed out were in fact the vegetable
oils which were labeled as having trans-fat levels greater than 1%. This
I witnessed in Foodtown in Onehunga and also in an independent
supermarket elsewhere. Are these an issue with out of date labeling
also? or are these products which have not been cleared yet?

You will note my original enquiry was also copied to Progressive Foods,
but I have not since heard back about this.

Response - 19-01-2007

Dear Mr Rouse,
Please contact Sally Inskter at Progressive to find out more information
on the oils.  The Heart Foundation Tick Programme has signed off the new
standard oils for both product and packaging, as mentioned in point 2
below.  If there is old stock in circulation, this is a matter for
Progressive to follow up.
I have raised your concern with Sally at Progressive, and appreciate you
raising it with the Tick Programme also.
Have a great weekend.
Kind regards,
Kathryn
