Should we be trying new fad methods to reduce our cholesterol? Email sent to Flora
Cholesterol is a valuable nutrient for the body, used by every cell in the body, why do I want to reduce it?
Consumption of plant sterols may reduce cholesterol consumption, and reduce blood cholesterol, a long term study would undoubtedly show that a healthy human body will just work harder to produce more cholesterol to compensate, and eventually cholesterol levels will return to a normal healthy level. (As pointed out by Dr Mary Enig - Lipids Researcher)
Finally you may be aware of the controversy surrounding the value of lowering cholesterol. Many scientists are of the opinion that high levels of cholesterol in the blood (providing not oxidised) is not a contributor to heart disease but maybe even a defence mechanism.
Do any of your studies in the use of Flora Pro-active suggest that it's use can decrease heart-disease or cancer? and if so were there any other side effects associated with this benefit? (ie depression)
I have my opinion of this campaign published here

I plan to place responses to my questions on this website! (I welcome debate)
Dear Gordon,
Thank you for your enquiry regarding Flora Pro-activ.
A wealth of evidence exists demonstrating the value of reducing blood cholesterol levels and supporting the inclusion of plant sterols in a diet for cholesterol-management. For some good summaries, I refer you to the following:
National Heart Foundation Position statement: Plant sterols and stanols http://www.heartfoundation.com.au/downloads/PlantSterol_Aug03_final.pdf
* Dietitians Association of Australia Statement : Plant sterol margarines http://www.daa.asn.au/index.asp?PageID=2145834114
* National Heart Foundation: Lipid Management Guidelines http://www.heartfoundation.com.au/index.cfm?page=40
* In addition, I would encourage you to consult the Flora Pro-activ website for an extensive list of studies supporting the efficacy and safety of plant sterol enriched spreads. http://www.florapro-activ.com.au/hcp/research/index.asp

I must confess I have not gone through those links very thoroughly, but I cannot find any answers to my specific questions in them. The best information was available from the pro-flora site itself, which at least had some graphs of cholesterol reduction per consumption, but nothing on how long this trial was for. |
