According to the researchers, the feeling of satisfaction (or feeling full) comes from protein. This is useful information for people trying to lose weight, although satiety and calorie control may not be everything for weight loss.
Interestingly, carbohydrates and fats have different effects on 'ghrelin' - the hormone that makes us feel full!
Carbohydrates create a quick sense of satisfaction - but according to researchers, hunger returns worse than before.
Fats on the other hand, do not create much satisfaction by themselves, being weak at creating satisfaction, but at least it is lasting.
Of course, the researchers made out that fats and carbohydrates are bad - yet they seem to forget that even people who are overweight still require calories!
If calorie control is the method employed for weight loss, then the interpretation of this study is quite simple, eat a diet high in protein, with natural levels of fats for your energy, and lower levels of carbohydrates.
Why?
Obviously everyone still needs energy, so go for the form of energy that gives you the best nutrients, and better long term satiety (even if it is slight) ie natural Fats. A high protein diet will also require more retinol, which will be found best in natural fats (mostly animal fats).
Obviously, foods rarely come in the form of protein, carbohydrates and fats by themselves - so protein may be the trigger that creates satiety, but in the past (before low-fat foods were invented) protein and fat always went hand in hand - whether through nuts, dairy or meat!
So if the high protein diet is the best form of weight-loss - (which this study may suggest but has not proved) then stick with natures version of this diet! |
