Healthy Fat Pyramid

This is a poster I have created which can be used as a guide to using fats and oils.
All oils on the "Healthy Fat Pyramid" are good for you if consumed in roughly the proportions suggested.

Note, that the occurence of animal fats in the eat most, is not to say that we should be eating more meat than vegetables, just that animal fats and tropical oils should be consumed greater than other vegetable oils. This does not preclude a diet that is still high in vegetables with respect to meat, as vegetables themselves are usually very low in fat.

A diet in whole foods will tend to create the same ratios as represented in the Healthy Fat Pyramid.

I thought that we should avoid canola oil, according to WAPF.

Unrefined canola oil has a reasonable ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6, but is actually predominantly mono -unsaturated. I have put it in the eat least as it is still very high in Omega 6 and Omega 3.

For Omega 3 supplementation I would recommend flax-seed oil over canola oil, however it can have a place in the diet.

It is important to avoid the canola oil in the supermarket shelves which are generally rancid, de-odirised and contain trans-fats.

Rape-seed oil was a traditional oil in India, which is not that unlike canola, although bred (sometimes GE modified) to reduce Euracidic acid.

WAP articles do stress the danger of canola oil, however this is mostly because this oil is promoted as a cooking oil, and the supermarket variety is so poor in quality. It is also used far too abundantly in Western  Foods.
